In a Socratic Seminar, students engage in inquiry and text-based discussion, not debate or argument.
The teacher serves as a discussion director who redirects as needed, but the goal is a discussion among
the students. Students help one another understand the ideas, issues, and values reflected in a text, in
order to make meaning and find common ground, while also developing speaking and listening skills. Use this lesson plan to strengthen this skill.
